The City of Coventry received a Royal Charter in 1182 from King Henry II.   With its surrounding hamlets it was elevated to the status of County by King Henry VI in 1451.   Then in 1842, it reverted back to just becoming a city within the County of Warwickshire.
The metropolitan borough of Coventry was created in 1974, within the then new metropolitan county of West Midlands.   Coventry became a unitary authority in 1986, when West Midlands lost its administrative status, becoming purely a ceremonial and geographical county.   The Queen, in 2007, has been pleased to appoint Paul Sabapathy Esq CBE as Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for the County of the West Midlands following the retirement of Sir Robert Taylor KCVO.
Today the City of Coventry is nearly surrounded by the County of Warwickshire.
