The visit Ruskin made to Sicily in April 1874 represents the farthest he ever travelled, but it has received surprisingly little attention. Invited by the father of Amy Yule, a pupil at Winnington School, Ruskin travelled from Naples by sea to Palermo, also going by boat to Messina and Taormina before returning to the mainland. One special purpose was to see and draw the tombs of the Norman Kings of Sicily in Palermo Cathedral. The background and details of this visit will be discussed, amplified by reference to letters to Joan Severn (in the Ruskin Library); by Ruskin’s drawings of the sites; and by images taken recently by the speaker, travelling in Ruskin’s footsteps. |
