Restoration of the grave and Ruskin’s links with Croydon
Here rests from day's well-sustained burden,
JOHN JAMES RUSKIN,
born in Edinburgh,May 18 1785.
He died in his home in London, March 3 1864.
He was an entirely honest merchant
and his memory is, to all who keep it, dear and helpful.
His son, whom he loved to the uttermost
and taught to speak truth, says this of him

Dr Cynthia Gamble spoke of John Ruskin's links with Croydon and the tomb of his parents,
which he designed and which has been refurbished thanks to the generosity of members of
The Ruskin Society.
The stone mason from J.B.Shakespeare Ltd., Croydon, then described how the restoration had been done.
A vote of thanks to all concerned was given by Professor Michael Wheeler,
before we moved outside to the churchyard.
